Endometriosis and its Affects on Pregnancy

Endometriosis occurs when endometrial cells grow outside of the uterus, usually in the abdominal cavity. The endometrium attach to the organs inside the abdomen and react to the hormones of a woman's monthly menstrual cycle the same as the endometrial cells of the uterus. But unlike the cells inside the uterus which flush out of the woman's body during her period the endometrial cells flush into the abdomen, causing pain and discomfort. This recurring cycle can also lead to scar tissue developing inside the abdomen.

Endometriosis can affect a woman's ability to get pregnant as well. Many women who suffer from endometriosis find it difficult to get pregnant and for some women endometriosis prevents them from ever getting pregnant. Sometimes the inability to conceive a child can be over come with treatment and fertility drugs, but this is not always guaranteed.

Hormone treatments are used to treat endometriosis and it is almost impossible to get pregnant if a woman is using hormone drugs to deal with her condition. These drugs, such as Danazol and Lupron, stop the woman's monthly cycle, forcing her into a drug induced menopause. With no eggs being released or uterine wall nutrient build up her chances of getting pregnant are very slim.

There is a slight chance that she may get pregnant using these hormone altering drugs and all precautions should be taken to ensure that a pregnancy doesn't happen because these hormone treatments can cause severe birth defects in the baby.

It has been shown that laparoscopic surgery to remove lesions and cysts improves a woman's chance of getting pregnant if she suffers from endometriosis. There is a 75% success rate for women with mild endometriosis, 50%-60% for women with moderate cases, and 30%-40% for severe cases of endometriosis.

Endometriosis will not harm a pregnancy once it has occurred. In fact the Endometriosis will go away during a pregnancy because the woman's menstrual cycle is no longer occurring. But pregnancy is not a cure. Once she has given birth and her monthly cycle starts again the endometriosis will return.

If you have endometriosis and are trying to get pregnant it is very important that you talk to your doctor about your options.
